If you have a pet living with you at home, fleas, bed bugs, and tick bites are just flat out inevitable. Luckily, there is a growing list of essential oils that are good for fleas and ticks on dogs living with you in your household.
I mean, you only have to look and you will find that there are even homemade flea sprays that use essential oils like tea tree oils and neem oils to repel fleas and ticks.
There is a long list of best essential oils that can be used to repel fleas and tick bites, but… here are our recommended Essential Oils For Fleas & Ticks if you have a dog or cat living with you in your household:
And chances are that you possibly could be asking, why not just buy over the counter flea spray and save time mixing essential oils with other homemade spray recipes out there?
Well, turns out that with fleas and ticks, prevention is the best way to stay on top of home flea infestation. So, if you were going to prevent your house from flea infestation, using a natural homemade flea spray is ethical as most chemical oriented pet flea sprays and medications have serious consequential effects on pets when used long term.
When it comes to natural tick repellants for pets, nothing screams natural than a homemade flea spray made with love on your kitchen counter, after choosing what to put on loved cat or dog’s body.
There is no shortage of Flea spray recipes that can be made by pet owners at home. And some of the most effective essential oils safe for use on dogs include lavender, lemongrass, cedarwood, geranium, peppermint, and eucalyptus.
Personally, I like to use the Citrus homemade flea spray – This one is easy to make at home… all you have to do is just mix the juice from a freshly squeezed lemon or orange and a few dashes of lemongrass essential oil which works wonders as a repellent, but also delivers a refreshingly pleasant smell around the home when applied directly to your dog’s coat.
So, to make your homemade spray for fleas and ticks in your kitchen, you will need a few things. And the best place to start from is choosing your best carrier oil for your dog’s coat spray.
When choosing your carrier oil, there are no written rules except that your choice of carrier oils must be the one you consider to be safe for your pet’s topical application.
Because dogs and cats often lick their coat as a way of grooming themselves, it’s important that there is a safety net and peace of mind that when your pet licks herself, she is licking a coat covered in edible spray.
So as a rule of thumb, always choose food grade carrier oils like:
Ingredients for DIY Essential Oil Flea & Tick Spray
2 tablespoons of Mama Z’s Oil Base or favorite carrier oil*
1 drop of Lavender Essential Oil.
1 drop of Grapefruit Essential Oil (see note below if using for cats)
1 drop of Eucalyptus Essential Oil.
1 drop of Lemongrass Essential Oil.
1 drop of Geranium Essential Oil.
To make your flea and tick spray, you will need to mix your measured ingredients into an empty clean reusable spray bottle using a funnel.
When you are ready, shake the mixture vigorously for half to a minute long and you are all set to start spraying your pet all over her coat, making sure that your pet’s eyes and mouth are kept protected.
Make sure to include the spray every time you are going out for a walk in wooded outdoor areas, that way your dog does not bring home ticks and fleas from the bush.
